The Phoenix Suns didn’t make it easy on themselves but a strong showing from the second unit to start the fourth quarter gave them the separation needed to get a victory over the Charlotte Bobcats.

The Bobcats pushed their halftime lead to ten points early in the third quarter before Alvin Gentry called a time out. From that point on the Suns had the game tied at the end of three and were up 10 halfway through the fourth quarter.

The hero of the night was Robin Lopez who scored 13 points to go along with six rebounds and solid defense in his 19 minutes of play. Josh Childress was strong as well as the bench was able to allow Steve Nash to rest until the four minute mark.

“The major problem was when Lopez came in,” Bobcats coach Paul Silas said, “We didn’t box him out and it really just changed the whole game around.”

The Suns held the Bobcats to and just 17 points in the fourth quarter with about half of those coming in the final desperate minutes. Phoenix was led by Michael Redd who got the start in place of the injured Jared Dudley. Redd finished with 17 points on 6-12 shooting. Rookie point guard Kemba Walker had 22 points for Charlotte.

The much-needed home win gives the Suns a 9-14 record on the season while the Bobcats fall to 3-21. The Suns now travel to Atlanta to face the Hawks on Monday and then to Milwaukee to meet the Bucks on Tuesday.

by Paul Coro - Feb. 4, 2012 07:45 PM The Arizona Republic Suns coach Alvin Gentry has an ideal description for Jared Dudley's play -- parasitic. Dudley is the NBA's parasite.

          				by Paul Coro – Feb. 4, 2012 07:45 PM
The Arizona Republic

Suns coach Alvin Gentry has an ideal description for Jared Dudley’s play — parasitic.

Dudley is the NBA’s parasite. He using his hustle, savvy and opportunity to benefit at the expense of those who are less engaged. The latest example has been his play since returning to the starting lineup. He has feasted off being fouled, took advantage of point guard Steve Nash creating open 3-point shots and using angles and reads to get to balls against players who are bigger or quicker.

The Suns had to go without that Saturday night, when Dudley sat out the Suns’ home game against Charlotte because of a thigh bruise. Dudley has scored at least 15 points in each of the four starts he has made since a five-game bench stint. He went from averaging 5.8 points as a reserve to averaging 16.3 in those four starts.

“This is what I was supposed to do,” Dudley said. “I expected to do this just because I know I can shoot the ball, and I know I can play, especially with Steve and this offense. I think I’ve even added a dimension where I can get to the basket to drop off and make my teammates better.”

The Suns are 5-3 when Dudley scores 15, but that scoring was inconsistent on his first go-around as starter this season, when he opened it in a shooting slump. Dudley has made eight of his past 15 3s, bolstering his career-best season for scoring (10.8) and rebounding (4.1) averages.

Dudley shot 3 for 13 in the first two games, both losses, and did not score in the second game against Philadelphia — a remarkable no-no for a starting shooting guard .

“The chemistry in the first part of the season was tough,” Dudley said. “Guys were staying home close (to me on defense). I’ve had a lot more space and been able to put the ball down better. Once you hit a couple, it’s confidence. I told you in the beginning of the year that you go by percentages. At the end of the year, I’m going to be shooting a good percentage.”

Dudley had scored 23 of his 65 points over the previous four games at the free-throw line. It was the first time in his career that he shot at least four free throws in four consecutive games.

“It’s something I’ve worked on, and my free-throw percentage (81.4) has gotten better,” Dudley said. “That’s something I worked on, and that makes you even more aggressive. It’s hard for me to get all the way to the basket because I’m not the fastest guy. Usually someone’s on my hip and (I) try to do what the whole NBA does — flop and … pray for a call. I did theater in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th grades, so I have to pay off for those classes.”

Guard Michael Redd started in Dudley’s place Saturday night, getting his first start with Phoenix in 10 appearances.

Free throws

- Suns center Marcin Gortat has a chance to become the seventh Suns player to average at least 15 points and 10 rebounds in a season. One of the others was current Charlotte coach Paul Silas. Charles Barkley (four times), Shawn Marion (three) and Neal Walk (two) did it multiple times, and Connie Hawkins and Maurice Lucas also each did it once.

- The Suns have played 23 games in this lockout-shortened season. The NBA’s previous lockout-shortened schedule, in 1999, tipped off on this date — Feb. 5.

- This season is the 20th for US Airways Center. The Suns have a losing record at home this season but have the fourth-best home record in the NBA since the arena opened with in 1992-93, when the Suns reached the NBA Finals. They have won more than 70 percent of their home games.

That’s all the news for today.

(Sports Network) – The Charlotte Bobcats certainly hope to halt an ugly 10-
game skid tonight but maybe Paul Silas’ club should just focus on staying
competitive when its visits the desert to take on the Phoenix Suns.

The Bobcats are an NBA worst 3-20 and have lost the first two games of a four-
game road trip by an average of 38.5 ppg. After falling in Hollywood to the
Lakers by 33, Charlotte responded with a 44-point setback in Rip City against
Portland.

Gerald Henderson scored 16 points on Wednesday vs. the Blazers while Derrick
Brown finished with 12 points for the Bobcats, who shot just 32.1 percent from
the field.

“This one’s over and we have to move on…it was a bad game for us,” Silas
understated.

Henderson, the team’s leading scorer at 15.0 ppg, strained his hamstring in
Portland and is expected to miss two to four weeks of action.

Charlotte, which will finish its trek in Boston on Tuesday, is a dismal 1-12
as the visitor on the season. It has lost 10 straight for the longest slide
since a franchise-record 13-game skid from Jan. 11-Feb. 1, 2006.

The Suns are back in the desert following a brief two-game road trip (1-1) and
hope to gain a measure of consistency, having lost five of seven and 10 of
their last 14 contests.

In a 99-81 loss at Houston last night, Marcin Gortat recorded a double-double
of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jared Dudley also scored 15 points and Steve
Nash provided just six points and handed out nine assists for Phoenix, which
made 41 percent of its shots and was outrebounded by a 49-39 margin.

“We came out without any energy and we could never find our rhythm,” Gortat
said. “They came out strong and with a lot of energy. We were not ready to
play either physically or mentally. We didn’t have the best effort. I’m trying
to do as much as possible and it is very frustrating.”

Phoenix hopes to improve on its 4-6 home record tonight.

The Bobcats have actually won four straight over Phoenix and five of six
overall. In the Valley of the Sun, Charlotte is 2-5 all-time in its short
history.

The Phoenix Suns haven’t earned too many wins lately, especially at home,
but a matchup with the NBA’s worst team would appear to provide the opportunity
for a rare victory.

The Suns will try to record their second win in six games at the U.S.
Airways Center on Saturday night when they face the short-handed Charlotte
Bobcats.

Phoenix (8-14) is 4-10 over its last 14 games after a 99-81 loss in Houston
on Friday in which it trailed by 20 points at the half.

“We need to play harder and play ‘grown-man’ basketball and not get pushed
around,” coach Alvin Gentry said. “You have to compete and match energy with
energy. I wasn’t pleased with anything we did.”

The Suns’ next opponent knows displeasure all too well.

The Bobcats (3-20) have lost 10 straight for their longest skid since a
franchise-record 13 consecutive defeats Jan. 11-Feb. 1, 2006. They’re also 1-12
on the road this season and on the verge of losing 11 in a row there for the
first time since Nov. 7, 2007-Jan. 4, 2008.

To make matters worse, Charlotte likely won’t have leading scorer Gerald
Henderson for two to four weeks because of a strained right hamstring. An
injured toe has kept starting point guard D.J. Augustin out of the last six
games, including the worst loss in franchise history Wednesday.

After getting beat by 33 points to open a four-game trip, the Bobcats were
thumped 112-68 by Portland.

“It’s been unbelievably hard. And there’s really nothing I can do about it.
The guys are playing as hard as they can. We just don’t have enough (talent) at
this particular point,” coach Paul Silas said. “You take the three top players
off anyone’s team, and they’re not going to do well.”

The Bobcats, though, have done well against the Suns lately with four
straight wins in the series and two in a row in Phoenix after dropping their
first five games there.

Boris Diaw had 18 points against his former team during a 114-107 win at the
U.S. Airways Center on Jan. 26, 2011, but the other five players who scored in
double figures in that game are either injured or no longer with the team.

The forward also scored a team-best 26 points during a 123-105 home victory
on Nov. 20, 2010. He has averaged 23.0 points on 66.7 percent shooting and 9.0
rebounds over his last three games in Phoenix, where he played three-plus
seasons before being traded in a six-player deal Dec. 11, 2008.

Steve Nash, meanwhile, will try to improve on his 24.0-point average over
his last three home matchups with Charlotte. He scored 27 points on 11-of-15
shooting during the loss on Jan. 26.

That’s all for today.

The Portland Trail Blazers absolutely smoked the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night (Feb.

The Portland Trail Blazers absolutely smoked the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night (Feb. 1). The reality is that Blazers fans should worry if the Blazers didn’t run up the score on the worst team in the NBA. It’s just too bad that the Blazers only get to play the Bobcats one time this year in the abridged NBA schedule.

After a good practice on Tuesday (Jan. 31), this looked like a completely different Blazers team. Something must have clicked, because against the Bobcats the team was spreading the floor well, presenting a press defense that we hadn’t seen and running the fast break with a confidence that simply hadn’t been there. That is in addition to the great defensive presence of Marcus Camby , who deserves some strong consideration for NBA Defensive Player of the Year with how well he has been defending for the Blazers.

The Blazers scored a season-high 35 points in the first quarter, had 61 at halftime and from there it was an easy cruise to free chalupas for the Rose Garden crowd. Everything about this game was fun for the fans, but maybe not quite as interesting as a close game against a team like the Oklahoma City Thunder. Still, it’s nice to watch a game that more resembles a track meet than anything else, especially because of the smiles that cross the faces of nearly every Blazers player. Getting the last five guys at the end of the bench some significant action will likely help the team in the long-term as well.

Jamal Crawford finished as the leading scorer for the team in just 21 minutes, putting up 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting. Gerald Wallace was 7-for-14 on his way to 23 points and LaMarcus Aldridge finished 8-for-16 from the field to score 22 points. This was the best shooting game of the season for the Blazers, simultaneously taking place during the best defensive game of the year as well. At one point, Marcus Camby had 3 blocks in about 15 second of game time. Camby finished with 5 blocks, 4 points, 5 assists and 7 rebounds in just 25 minutes of work.

Despite a rough fourth quarter shooting-wise, the Blazers finished this one off pretty easily to post a 112-68 win over the hapless Bobcats. It’s noteworthy that the biggest win in franchise history was 50 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers and that the team came very close to setting a new mark in this one. It was also nice that 12 players scored for the Blazers in the win.

Now the Blazers head down to California for a game against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night (Feb. 2) that starts at 7 p.m. PT.

Apparently, I was very generous in my game preview when I said the Charlotte Bobcats would score 92 points in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. In actuality, the Bobcats put up only 73 points against the Lakers at the Staples Center – 19 points shy of my predicted total.

The Lakers wanted to make a statement before heading out on a six-game road trip over the next two weeks – one that doesn’t return the Lakers back to Los Angeles until February 14—and the Lakers did more than make a statement, they absolutely destroyed the Bobcats.

For the third straight time, the Lakers beat the visiting Bobcats at the Staples Center and did so in impressive fashion. For the first two quarters, the Lakers outscored the Bobcats with the exact same total, 30-18. In fact, Kobe Bryant had 18 first quarter points, matching the Bobcats total. And despite the Bobcats outscoring the Lakers 22-13 in the third quarter, the Lakers capped off the blowout with a 33-15 fourth quarter. The best part of all the stats may have been the amount of minutes Bryant didn’t have to play and got to spend resting.

Bryant contributed his fair share scoring 24 points—all in the first half—on 9-of-21 shooting, in 27 minutes, but as a fan, it was nice to see that the Lakers didn’t have to depend on Bryant putting up 35 shots in order for them to walk away with a win. After not scoring over 100 points for 13 consecutive games in January, the Lakers scored 106 against the Minnesota Timberwolves on January 29 and again scored 106 against the league’s worst team on January 31.

The Bobcats lost their ninth-straight game and barely stood a chance against the Lakers who were on the hapless Bobcats from the beginning. The immediate implications of this victory are yet to be seen, but I would have to believe that a win of such magnitude, and their second straight 106-point performance, has to give the Lakers a good amount of momentum as they head out on the road to face some tough challenges.

On their upcoming road trip the Lakers face some teams playing solid basketball, including the Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, and the Philadelphia 76ers. Their first matchup of the road trip for the Lakers will be the Nuggets, who are in third in the Western Conference and have lost two straight after rattling off six straight wins from January 17-27.

I would like to believe the Lakers are going to try and take advantage of the small stumble the Nuggets have experienced and try to climb the Western Conference rankings while improving on their 2-7 road record.

About the Bobcats: Charlotte lost 106-73 to the Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday night as Andrew Bynum finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. … It was the Bobcats’ ninth consecutive loss and they have the fewest wins in the NBA. … Henderson, who was questionable against the Lakers because of a lower back contusion, led the Bobcats with 14 points. … Charlotte, which is playing the second game of a back-to-back, is 1-6 in such games this season. That record improves to 2-7 when counting how the Bobcats fared in their only back-to-back-to-back of the season. … Walker, a rookie, had the best game of his career Saturday against
Washington, finishing with his first triple-double (20 points, 11
assists and 10 rebounds). He set career-highs in assists and rebounds.
It was the third triple-double in Bobcats history and the first by a
rookie in the NBA this season. … Diaw added 21 points and 10 assists against Washington, recording his third double-double of the season … The Bobcats are visiting Portland on the second game of a four-game trip. … Former Blazers general manager Rich Cho holds the same job for the Bobcats.

About the Blazers: The Blazers are 9-1 at the Rose Garden and have the second-best home record in the Western Conference. … They are shooting a higher percentage (45.9 to 41.3 percent) and averaging far more points (104.0 to 90.5) at home than they are on the road, where they are 3-8. … The Blazers finished January 9-9. Eleven of the games were on the road. … In February, they play 14 games and just six on the road. … Since Jan. 14, Matthews is
shooting 29.9 percent from the field (35 of 117), including 32.7
percent from three-point range (17 of 52). … Wallace (six) and Felton (five) played a combined 11 seasons for Charlotte and assistant coach Bernie Bickerstaff held coaching and front office jobs there for four seasons. … Aldridge ranks seventh in the NBA in scoring. … Reserve forward Nicolas Batum underwent an MRI on his left knee Tuesday and the results revealed a left knee bone contusion. He will not play tonight and likely will also miss Thursday’s game at the Sacramento Kings.

Series history: The Blazers have won four of the last five meetings and own a 9-5 all-time edge in the series. This includes a 5-2 advantage at the Rose Garden. The teams split two games last season, with each winning at home. Aldridge averaged 20.5 points and 8.5 rebounds during against the Bobcats last season. This is the only game between the teams this season.

Injuries: Center Greg Oden (left knee) and Batum (left knee) will not play for the Blazers. Guard D.J. Augustin (right big toe) is day-to-day, forward Reggie Evans (left knee) is doubtful and guard Corey Maggette (left hamstring) is out for the Bobcats.

The Portland Trail Blazers look to get back to winning with a game against the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night (Feb. 1). This is the only time that Portland gets to play Charlotte this year, which is too bad, because the Bobcats are currently the worst team in the league. Charlotte comes into this game with a 3-19 record and a current nine-game losing streak.

Portland lost to the Utah Jazz on Monday night (Jan. 30) in a frustrating loss that brought an end to January. Now the month of February begins against Charlotte in a game that the team should have no problem winning. Add to it the fact that the Blazers get to play it at home and it almost seems like a cake walk for the team. That’s a good thing, because tough games against the Denver Nuggets (Feb. 4), Oklahoma City Thunder (Feb. 6) and Dallas Mavericks (Feb. 11) are coming up very quickly.

Kemba Walker seems to have become the new leader for the Bobcats, especially after injuries have taken down Corey Maggette, D.J. Augustin and now Gerald Henderson. Walker is a rookie out of Connecticut, who is averaging 12.2 points, 3.6 assists and 4.1 rebounds this year. He just recently made it into the starting lineup though, so his statistics have been getting better recently. This is a team that is just scoring 88.1 points per night though, so it shows that there isn’t much else to the roster.

Portland may have to play without Nicolas Batum in this game because he is suffering through a bone bruise to his knee that happened in the loss to Utah. It looked like an injury that could have sidelined Batum for a long time, so learning that it is just a bruise is definitely good news for the team. A few nights off won’t hurt him at all; especially against a terrible team like Charlotte when Portland shouldn’t even need him on the court.

There is nothing more to say than the fact that Portland has to get it done against the Bobcats. In fact, winning this fame by less than 10 points would probably disappoint the fans. Hopefully the players on the end of the bench get a lot of minutes in this game to allow LaMarcus Aldridge and Marcus Camby to get more rest that usual.

Game time against Charlotte is 7 p.m. PT

Some things to keep an eye on when the Lakers (12-9) host the Charlotte Bobcats (3-18) tonight (Tuesday) at Staples Center.

1. Will the Lakers lay an egg? On paper, the Lakers should easily win this game. Charlotte has the NBA’s worst record; the Lakers are 10-2 at home. The Bobcats will feature injured starters in D.J. Augustin (sore toe) and Corey Maggette (strained hamstring). But there are plenty of reasons why no one should put it past the Lakers to blow this opportunity for an easy win.

L.A. is 6-8 against the Bobcats and has lost three of seven home games against them. The Lakers took Monday off to rest their legs, but that could contribute to bad execution. The Lakers have a six-game trip beginning Friday at Denver, and they could enjoy the friendly confines of Staples Center a little too much. And most importantly, the Lakers remain unpredictable.

2. The Lakers must play well enough to rest their starters. Coach Mike Brown has remained reluctant to limit his starters’ minutes. The Lakers have simply proven to be too unreliable at compiling wins without Kobe Bryant (38.6 minutes), Pau Gasol (37.7) and Andrew Bynum (34.4) shouldering the load. With given how much the team struggles on the road, L.A. can’t afford to squander this opportunity against Charlotte. Not only does the team have to win, it has to do with comfortable margins. The game against Charlotte gives the Lakers a prime opportunity to give the starters some rest. Brown’s failure to monitor these minutes could prove costly later in the season.

3. Use this game as extended practice. With the Lakers lacking quality practice time because of the compacted schedule, this is the best opportunity to sharpen concepts. At the beginning of the game, let Bryant, Bynum and Gasol figure out the perfect balance in scoring. With Lakers forward Metta World Peace starting for the second consecutive game, this could be an opportunity for him to improve his rhythm. With the Laker bench hardly looking like one with an identity, this game could be a psychological pick-me-up. And most importantly, the Lakers could learn better how to execute the read offense.

*Usually, there are five things to watch in a game. Not this one. And if there are, the Lakers are in more trouble than everyone thought.

After earning just their second road win of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers have a long road trip ahead of them. The Lakers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 106-101 on Sunday, January 29, improving their road record to a dismal 2-7. The Lakers will travel across the U.S. and even into Canada during their upcoming six-game road trip. Hopefully, that record will see some vast improvement once the Lakers get back out on the road, but not before they face the Charlotte Bobcats on January 31. The matchup against the Bobcats will be their only home game until February 14.

The Bobcats, who are equally as bad on the road as the Lakers are, have the misfortune of playing the Lakers at Staples Center – where the Lakers are 10-2 on the season. Then again, with the Bobcats record being 3-18, I’m not too sure it would matter where these two teams played, it would still be a rough go for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats have won just one road game all year and the Lakers nearly lost in Minnesota after blowing 18 point lead. However, the Lakers will now look for their first back-to-back victories since their five-game winning streak ended in the middle of January. Also, against the Timberwolves, the Lakers topped the 100-point mark for just the first time in 13 games, something Lakers will look to duplicate against the Bobcats. The Bobcats however will be looking to avoid their ninth straight loss and just their second win of the month as their only victory in January has come against the Golden State Warriors on January 14.

As a fan, watching the Lakers play lately has been a bit of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. The only beacon of consistency, in my opinion, has been Kobe Bryant—who not only leads the Lakers, but the league, in scoring. The recent emergence of Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum as central contributors will definitely help the Lakers mold into their new offense of rhythm. Playing with Mike Brown has not been easy for some Lakers as they have moved away from their traditional triangle offense that was so well-known by many Laker fans.

With he Bobcats struggling from injuries, I don’t expect the Lakers do have too much trouble improving the home record to 11-2—as the Lakers have won two straight against the Bobcats at home. The victory would also give the Lakers a small piece of momentum before they head out on the road – something they desperately need if they wish to improve upon their dreary road record.

I have to believe that the Lakers would not surrender an opportunity to put away a team like the Bobcats before heading on the road for such a long road trip. If they want to stay competitive in the Western Conference they’re going to need to continue beating teams they’re supposed to and begin winning on the road.

Prediction: Lakers 103 – Bobcats 92

Here come the big, bad Charlotte Bobcats.

And that usually means big trouble for the Lakers.

Only two teams have winning records against the Lakers.

The Boston Celtics, winners of a league-record 17 titles, are one of them.

The other? The Bobcats, the winners of zero championships.

The Bobcats have given the Lakers fits during their short life in the NBA. The Bobcats are 8-6 against the Lakers, including a 20-point win last season in Charlotte that so infuriated then-coach Phil Jackson he held a 10-second news conference.

Longtime beat reporters couldn’t remember a shorter postgame session.

Jackson’s analysis of games won and lost nearly was as legendary as his coaching record, a thoughtful, entertaining discussion of events and performances. But he spat out a couple of words and retreated to the visiting locker room in disgust.

Charlotte is 3-18 this season, has lost eight consecutive games and is 1-9 on the road.

The Bobcats should be a pushover, right?

Maybe, maybe not.

Taking the Bobcats seriously and actually winning a game they should win figures to be a stern test for the Lakers, who are coming off a credible showing Sunday while defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves for their second road win in 2011-12.

Winning their second in a row and their third in four games would be just the sort of momentum-builder the Lakers would seem to covet going into a six-game trip

to Denver, Utah, Philadelphia, Boston, New York and Toronto, their longest of the season.

The Lakers are 10-2 at home but only 2-7 on the road. They play all but four of their 13games in February away from home, so it would appear today’s game would border on must-win before they pack their bags for their annual Grammys trip.

Still the best?

Kobe Bryant certainly had the Timberwolves believing he still was the game’s best closer after he scored 22 of his team-leading 35 points in the second half of the Lakers’ victory Sunday. Bryant also had a season-high 14 rebounds.

“I don’t know if he’s the best or not,” Minnesota rookie guard Ricky Rubio said. “But in that last quarter? For sure. I mean, for 48 minutes, there are players like LeBron (James) and Derrick Rose who can be in that top position.

“But in the end of the game, he’s the best.”

Tough enough

Rubio and Lakers power forward Pau Gasol have been playing together on the Spanish national team since they won a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Rubio doesn’t believe the common perception that the 7-foot Gasol is a weakling in the lane.

“A lot of people say Pau is soft (but) I can tell you he’s not,” Rubio said after watching his countryman score a season-high 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting. “I practiced with him a lot in the summer and he’s tough.

“I mean, he plays hard and one of the best things is he’s a leader. A leader can’t be soft.”

		By STEVE REED
AP Sports Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – The Washington Wizards may have found the recipe for winning this season: playing the Charlotte Bobcats.

Well, that and a balanced offensive attack.

The Wizards (4-16) defeated the Bobcats for the second time in four nights Saturday 102-99 as six players scored in double digits, including JaVale McGee, who led the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

The week’s two wins equal the Wizards’ total number of victories in their first 17 games combined.

John Wall added 13 points and 10 assists for the Wizards (4-16). They also got 21 points from Nick Young, while reserves Trevor Booker and Jordan Crawford chipped in with 16 and 12 points, respectively.

“We had good balance,” Wall said. “I think tonight nobody cared about who scored. We just went out there and played basketball. That’s what you’ve got to do to win. Some nights it’s going to be different people leading in scoring and you’ve just got to live with it.”

Washington’s victory offset a terrific performance from rookie Bobcats rookie Kemba Walker, who had 20 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. Walker became the first rookie this season to register a triple-double.

Three rookies accomplished the feat a year ago: Wall, Blake Griffin and Jordan Crawford.

Coach Paul Silas has asked Walker to look for his teammates more since moving over to point guard following the injury to D.J. Augustin last week. On Saturday night Walker seemed to heed the message.

He seemed to see the floor better than he has in his previous three starts at the point.

“I was just more patient tonight,” Walker said. “I’ve been watching a lot of film with the coaches and they’ve been showing me certain opportunities that I have on the court that I haven’t been taking. Tonight, I just took those opportunities and that just made things a lot easier.”

Silas said Walker, the ninth overall pick in the NBA draft, is starting to develop some point guard skills, which is encouraging.

“He really is coming along and he’s a really good rebounder for his size,” Silas said. “He gets in there all the time and he’s putting up numbers on the board scoringwise. This is really going to help them, as I told all the guys.”

For two teams battling to stay out of the NBA basement, it was a fairly intense game.

Wall said he could sense the Bobcats (3-18) wanted this game after losing earlier this week to the Wizards. The Bobcats have lost eight straight.

“We knew they wanted revenge for what we did to them on Wednesday night so we were coming out knowing it was going to be a tough match,” Wall said. “We figured out how to close out the game down the stretch.”

Well, sort of.

The Wizards made it more interesting than it needed to be.

Trailing 102-99 with 41.2 seconds left, the Bobcats had a chance to tie, but burned almost the entire shot clock, unable to get a look at an open 3-pointer as the Wizards stepped up the defense. Eventually, Boris Diaw drove the lane but missed and McGee quickly grabbed the rebound.

The Bobcats immediately fouled.

McGee had a chance to put the game on ice but with the Wizards leading by three missed two free throws with 6 seconds remaining. The Bobcats got the rebound off the second miss and called timeout.

They set up an inbounds play but Matt Carroll missed a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“I caught it a little deeper than I wanted and I was kind of hurried,” Carroll said. “I had a good look, but it just didn’t fall.”

It was Washington’s first win on the road.

“It feels good to get this first one because it’s much earlier than last year,” Young said. “It took us like 30-something games last year, so this is a big improvement.”

McGee was the latest center to have a field day against the Bobcats, exposing their lack of an interior defense. McGee shot 9 of 14 from the field and had good success using his hook shot.

Booker also ripped up the Bobcats, hitting on all 6 of his shots, most of those in and around the lane.

“Book, with his ability to roll to the basket and catch and finish was huge,” Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. “I don’t think he missed a shot did he? I mean 6 for 6, that was huge.”

The Bobcats got a good effort from Diaw, who was back in the starting lineup and contributed 21 points and 10 assists. Byron Mullens scored 23 points, while Carroll and Tyrus Thomas each added 13.

Notes: Washington shot 53% from the field and won despite being outrebounded by the smaller Bobcats 42-32. … The Bobcats were playing without five players, including their two leading scorers: Gerald Henderson and Augustin. Augustin has missed the last four games with a toe injury, while Henderson sat out after re-injuring his back in Friday night’s loss to the 76ers.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Washington Wizards may have found the recipe for winning this season: playing the Charlotte Bobcats.

They also got 21 points from Nick Young, while reserves Trevor Booker and Jordan Crawford chipped in with 16 and 12 points, respectively.ebounds and 11 assists. The 6-foot-1 Walker joined Stephen Jackson and Boris Diaw as the only players in franchise history to record such a feat.

“We had good balance,” Wall said. “I think tonight nobody cared about who scored. We just went out there and played basketball.

Booker also ripped up the Bobcats, hitting on all six of his shots, most of those in and around the lane.

      Notes

Washington shot 53 percent from the field and won despite being outrebounded by the smaller Bobcats 42-32.

The Bobcats were playing without five players, including their two leading scorers: Gerald Henderson and Augustin. Augustin has missed the last four games with a toe injury, while Henderson sat out after re-injuring his back in Friday night’s loss to the 76ers.
