CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Patrick Ewing is one of several candidates the Charlotte Bobcats will interview for their head coaching vacancy and the Hall of Fame center will meet with team officials next week, said people familiar with the situation.

The people spoke to The Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t publicly announced its list of candidates.

Ewing is an assistant with Orlando and a friend of Bobcats owner Michael Jordan.

The Bobcats have interviewed Golden State assistant coach Michael Malone and Bobcats assistant Stephen Silas, son of former Charlotte coach Paul Silas, the people told the AP. The Bobcats are also interested in Indiana assistant Brian Shaw, Cleveland assistant Nate Tibbetts and St. John’s assistant Mike Dunlap. It’s expected the Bobcats will talk to several other candidates before making a decision.

Charlotte finished last season 7-59, the worst winning percentage in NBA history (.106).

Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins and general manager Rich Cho are leading the coaching search and have been on the West coast this week where they interviewed Malone.

Malone interviewed for the Warriors head coaching position last year but lost out to Mark Jackson. Despite not getting the job, he was hired as an assistant coach on Jackson’s staff and is one of the highest paid assistants in the NBA at $750,000 per year. His father, Brendan, has worked as the head coach of the Toronto Raptors.

Higgins said after the season the Bobcats planned to undergo an exhaustive search that would include interviewing “quite a few” candidates for the job.

Ewing is the most recognizable name so far.

A college star Georgetown, Ewing played for the New York Knicks from 1985 through 2000. He’s worked extensively in developing Magic center Dwight Howard into an All-Star.

“It’s been mystifying to me that assistants that don’t have near the experience that Patrick has have been getting jobs,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said Wednesday. “He’s ready. And I hope this offseason will be his time.”

      He’ll face plenty of competition.

Among the other Bobcats candidates, Stephen Silas worked alongside his father and even stepped in as head coach for a handful of Bobcats games last season.

Shaw worked seven seasons an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers and also spent time in Cleveland. He interviewed for the Lakers’ job but management went with Mike Brown.

Most of Tibbetts’ coaching experience is in the NBA Developmental League. He worked as the head coach of the Tulsa 66ers before going to the Cavaliers.

Dunlap has been with St. John’s since 2010 and filled in as head coach last season while Steve Lavin recovered from cancer surgery. Previously he was an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets in 2006-08 and also has experience coaching in college at Southern California, Arizona and Oregon.

It’s possible the coaching search could stretch into June with some bigger profile candidates waiting to see if the Bobcats land the No. 1 pick in the May 30 NBA lottery.

The Bobcats know the job may not be an easy sell after coming off a rough season.

But Cho said previously he wants to hire a candidate that is excited about the challenge that lies ahead, not someone who looks at the job as an uphill battle.

“Those are the type of coaches we don’t want to bring in,” Cho said. “I want somebody that will relish the opportunity and look at it as a challenge. It’s really easy to go to a winning team and take that opportunity. But I want somebody in here that’s going to look at this as a great opportunity and a challenge and a chance to build something from the ground up.”

What do you guys think about this.

Patrick Ewing is one of several candidates the Charlotte Bobcats will interview for their head coaching vacancy and the Hall of Fame center will meet with team officials next week, said people familiar with the situation.

Despite not getting the job, he was hired as an assistant coach on Jackson’s staff and is one of the highest paid assistants in the NBA at $750,000 US per year.

Patrick Ewing, NBA legend and “Space Jam” co-star, is all set to be interviewed by the Charlotte Bobcats for the head coach position. This news comes shortly after it was announced that current coach Paul Silas would not return next year. Ewing will meet up with Charlotte officials as soon as Orlando is eliminated from the playoffs. Ewing, as you may know, is the assistant coach for the Magic.

Ewing has a history of mentoring large young men; he performed the same task for the Magic as well as Washington Wizards. It’s rumored that he will do the same thing for Anthony Davis should the Bobcats snap him up during the NBA draft. Ewing will have his work cut out for him, as the Bobcats managed to obtain the lowest winning percentage in league history. That isn’t the sort of honor people tend to brag about, so I’m sure Charlotte is hoping that Ewing and Davis could turn the program around.

Are you excited that Ewing may coach the Bobcats? Is this one of the worst decisions to NBA star has ever made? Let us know in the comments section. For your viewing pleasure, have a look at what some people are saying about the news on Twitter.

Michael Jordan and his Charlotte Bobcats will reportedly interview his friend and former rival Patrick Ewing for the team’s vacant head coaching position.

According to a report from Yahoo! Sports, the Orlando Magic assistant coach will meet with Charlotte management in the near future. The Magic were just eliminated from the NBA playoffs, losing to the Indiana Pacers in five games in their first-round Eastern Conference series.

The Bobcats are also expected to make pitches to Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Malone and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan.

Charlotte has been without a head coach since announcing that Paul Silas would not return to the Bobcats in 2012-13 after the team set a record for the lowest winning percentage in NBA history at .106.

Ewing has spent the last five seasons with the Magic as an assistant and is a longtime friend of Jordan, the majority owner of the Bobcats.

The 7-foot hall of famer played 17 seasons in the NBA after being selected first-overall by the New York Knicks in the 1985 NBA Draft.

Michael Malone and Patrick Ewing are reportedly the first two names being interviewed for the vacant head coaching position in Charlotte. Per the Contra Costa Times and Yahoo! Sports: “Malone, considered one of the NBA’s top assistant coaches, was expected to be a hot commodity this offseason. Malone is under contract for two more years with the Warriors. But Golden State general manager Bob Myers acknowledged Malone would likely be a head coaching candidate this offseason. [...] Ewing is a close friend of Charlotte owner Michael Jordan, and several sources believe the Hall of Fame center will turn out to be a serious candidate for the opening. Charlotte will make pitches to Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Malone and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan, but will likely hire its next coach from a pool of candidates like Ewing who have been less in demand for head-coaching jobs. Ewing has worked eight seasons as an NBA assistant, including the past five on Stan Van Gundy’s staff with the Magic. Detroit Pistons general manager Joe Dumars interviewed Ewing for his franchise’s head-coaching job last spring and was impressed with him. Charlotte officials flew to the Bay Area to meet with Malone on Tuesday.”

Longtime Orlando Magic assistant coach Patrick Ewing will interview for the Charlotte Bobcats’ head coaching job, Yahoo! Sports reports citing league sources.

The Bobcats are reportedly working on setting up an interview with Ewing after the Magic are eliminated from the playoffs. Ewing has been actively pursuing head coaching opportunities. The Hall of Fame former New York Knicks center has made the big transition into the coaching ranks, spending eight seasons working as an assistant coach. He is a close friend of Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan. Ewing was widely considered one of the top candidates for the job when Charlotte ultimately hired Paul Silas in 2011. The Bobcats removed Silas from the head coaching position and reassigned him to another role in the franchise last month after the team posted the worst season in NBA history.

Yahoo! Sports also reported the Bobcats are slated to interview Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Malone and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan, but added it will likely land a candidate who is less in demand for head coaching positions.

The Bobcats have a strong chance of winning the No. 1 draft selection slot during the NBA’s draft lottery May 30. If Charlotte earns the top pick. Kentucky center Anthony Davis is projected to be the No. 1 draft pick regardless of which team earns the top spot and has the potential to help the troubled Bobcats.

May 7, 2012 – Via Sam Amick, we learn that the Charlotte Bobcats have requested permission to speak with Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw. Amick also reports that Shaw said that while he was interested in the Charlotte job, the playoffs were his first priority.

Shaw came to the Pacers after seven years with Phil Jackson’s Los Angeles Lakers. His experience with championship winning teams from that organization has given him credibility with Pacers players, especially as they pursue their own championship in the 2012 NBA Playoffs. The Pacers currently hold a 3-1 series lead over the Orlando Magic, and they look to close out the first round matchup Tuesday night. SB Nation’s Indy Cornrows highlighted his contributions earlier this year:

Shaw really keeps the players’ attention with the benefit of his been-there-done-that advice backed up by his experience winning championships as a player and assistant coach.

Shaw also has the game to combine his words with workouts that push players to improve. The individual work players put in with coaches on game day is a key part of their development and preparation for games, even moreso this season with limited practice time.

The NBA Hall of Famer and now owner of the Charlotte Bobcats (7-59) just watched his team finish the 2011-12 season with the worst winning percentage (.106) in NBA history.

After such an abysmal year, it’s no surprise Jordan and the Bobcats have decided to go in a new direction, starting with the coach.

On Monday, the Bobcats held a news conference to announce the firing of head coach Paul Silas.

“We have been talking internally about what is best for us going forward,” Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins said. “The record kind of speaks for itself. When you look at the youthfulness of this roster … we just all felt collectively that the change was something we wanted to do at this time.”

Silas wasn’t surprised by the move, especially given how the season ended, and he said he is looking forward to life after basketball.

“I’m OK with that,” he said. “I have had a very successful career coaching and playing, and it’s time to move on.”

The Bobcats won’t make an immediate hire and are looking to bring in an energetic coach with an urgency to win, according to Higgins.

“We want someone who wants to win,” Higgins said. “That’s the main quality. We will have quite a few candidates. I would say there are quite a few people who come into mind.”

While he’ll no longer be calling the shots from the bench, it appears Silas had the support of his players until the very end.

Forward Corey Magette was campaigning for Silas to keep his job, using his words to back his coach after the season came to a close, according to the Associated Press.

“I think Paul did the best he could with the guys he had on the floor,” Maggette said Friday. “We went through a year where night after night guys were going down with injuries and you’re shooting under 30 percent from the field. You just can’t win any games that way. That’s tough. So hopefully they give him an opportunity to show what type of a coach he is and what he can bring to the table here.”

Magette’s words didn’t appear to have any impact on the Bobcats’ decision.

Silas heads off into the sunset, leaving a solid coaching record behind him. His most successful stint on the sidelines was during his first stop in Charlotte, when he coached the Hornets from 1998-2003. Silas led the Hornets to the playoffs in four straight seasons (2000-2003), including one in New Orleans, before leaving to coach LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers for nearly two seasons.

Silas ends his career with a 387-488 (.442) record and making the playoffs in four of his 12 years behind the bench.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. • The worst team in NBA history will have a new coach next season.

The Charlotte Bobcats have decided not to renew coach Paul Silas’ contract after the team finished 7-59 this season for the worst winning percentage in league history (.106).

“We have been talking internally about what is best for us going forward,” Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins said at a news conference Monday. “The record kind of speaks for itself. When you look at the youthfulness of this roster … we just all felt collectively that the change was something we wanted to do at this time.”

The 68-year-old Silas, who told The Associated Press late in the season he wanted to “see things through” and coach one more year, said Monday he found out earlier in the day he would not be brought back.

Silas said he was not surprised by the decision.

“I’m ok with that,” he said. “I have had a very successful career coaching and playing and it’s time to move on.”

Silas said he was promised a job in the organization by team owner Michael Jordan and said he’s retiring from coaching.

It’s unclear who’ll replace Silas, who leaves with a 32-88 record at Charlotte. Higgins said a search for his replacement will begin immediately.

“We do not have a timetable. We will start as soon as this presser is over,” he said. “I just don’t want to say there is a time frame. We plan on interviewing quite a few people. We want to find the right guy.”

Higgins said Silas’ son, Stephen Silas — who served as an assistant under his father and led the team in several games — will be interviewed for the job, but added finding someone with heading coaching experience “is important.”

story continues below

“We want someone who wants to win,” Higgins said. “That’s the main quality. We will have quite a few candidates. I would say there are quite a few people who come into mind.”

Finding someone who might be interested in taking over the last-place Bobcats might not be easy. They’re light on talent and experience and it could be a long way from competing for a playoff spot.

Bobcats general manager Rich Cho is aware this job might not be for everyone.

Silas was in a difficult situation heading into the season with a young and inexperienced team, plus a shortened offseason that limited practice time. Injuries to top players like Corey Maggette, D.J. Augustin and Gerald Henderson did not help.

“I respect Paul to the utmost,” Higgins said. “He wanted to be successful but it was an unfortunate thing that it didn’t happen.”

Late in the season, Silas was involved in an altercation with forward Tyrus Thomas, shoving him in the locker room following a loss. The two had gotten into an argument and had to be separated.

Paul Silas was fired as head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats after leading the eight-year-old franchise to the National Basketball Association’s worst-ever record and a search for his successor is underway.

Silas guided Charlotte to a 7-59 record in his first full season with the Bobcats in a lockout-shortened 66-game 2011-12 season where the team’s .106 winning percentage set a new mark for futility.

“I would like to personally thank Paul for everything he has done for this team under some pretty unique circumstances,” Rod Higgins, the Bobcats’ president of basketball operations, said in a statement.

“We have been fortunate to have someone of his character associated with this franchise and we hope he will continue to be a valuable resource to us in the future.”

Silas, 68, was named interim coach of the Bobcats in December 2010 and led that team to a 25-29 record over the remainder of the 2010-11 season. The interim title was removed from his position in February of that season.

He compiled an overall record of 32-88 with the Bobcats, who have qualified for the playoffs only once.

In 11 seasons as an NBA head coach, Silas has a career record of 377-531 following stints with the Clippers, Hornets, Cavaliers, and Bobcats.

    Silas was a two-time All-Star and three-time NBA champion as a player.

He also spent 11 seasons as an assistant coach for the Hornets, Knicks, Nets and Suns.
